Silicon Layer

Transistor: The Electric Switch

Dive from a rainbow wafer through the wiring floors to a single transistor, watch an untouching gate bridge electrons into a channel, see why the switch never fully turns off, and pull back nine orders of magnitude from atom to wafer.

A rainbow disc

A disc of silicon 300 mm across and less than a millimetre thick. Each square laid out on its surface like a chessboard will be cut free to become one chip. It shimmers in rainbow colours because the wiring etched into its face is so fine that it diffracts the waves of light. On this journey we dive into one die on this disc and go all the way down to a single switch at the bottom.

Turn the wafer to watch the rainbow flow, then press “Pick a die” to dive into one.
